A St Elizabeth-based doctor, Alvin Grant was on Friday slapped with a 12-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to medical insurance fraud in the amount of $5 million.

Grant, who was appearing before the St Andrew Parish Court, had earlier pleaded guilty at his trial last October.

The medical doctor was charged in March 2016 after an investigation by the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s Counter-Terrorism and Organised Crime Investigation branch (CTOC) , revealed that he had taken steps to defraud Guardian Life Insurance Company of more than $5 million in a medical insurance racket.

The court was told that between 2013 and 2016 Grant submitted fictitious claims to Guardian Life for medical treatment he claimed to have administered to his patients. He received payments totaling more than $5 million from the insurance company.

The fraud was uncovered by officials from the company who called in the police.
