Sagicor Group Jamaica has committed to a $5-million donation to the St James Municipal Corporation to assist with the rebuilding and recovery efforts.

Sagicor Group Jamaica has committed to donating $5 million to Montego Bay, St James, to assist in the recovery efforts after last week’s floods which caused extensive damage to some businesses, slowing commercial activity in the Second City.

Christopher Zacca, president and CEO of Sagicor Group Jamaica, in announcing the donation, said: “We could never turn a blind eye to this situation. The people of Montego Bay need help to rebuild, and Sagicor will step forward.”

Zacca added: “Sagicor Bank, Sagicor Life and Sagicor Investments all have branches in Montego Bay and it is many of our clients who have been deeply affected. Helping them to rebuild is going to be a major focus of ours.”

Montego Bay Mayor Homer Davis said the municipality was “very grateful” to Sagicor.

“The people of Montego Bay are strong, but this has affected all of us in a real way. These funds will go a long way towards clean-up and recovery efforts, particularly in the downtown area, which was badly affected.”

In response to the disaster, which has devastated so many business owners, Zacca noted: “Our team members and clients have been affected, as well as the entire community of Montego Bay. It will take time to rebuild, and it’s our responsibility to help during this period.”
