HISTORY OF NEM
In 1934, a small Kingston-based firm by the name of A. C. Saward & Co. Ltd. was appointed Chief Agent for Jamaica by the then UK Insurer, National Employers' Mutual General Insurance Association (NEMGIA).
From this humble beginning, National Employers' Mutual (Jamaica) Ltd. (NEM) was born, becoming the first general insurance company to be established in Jamaica.
In 1980, majority ownership changed with NEMGIA's shareholding reduced to 48% while the remaining majority shares were sold to local partners Jamaica National Building Society and Mutual Life Assurance.
In 1990 the 48% shareholding was later sold to the Mutual/Jamaica National consortium. With that partial localization came a name change to N.E.M. Insurance Company (Jamaica) Limited.
In April 2000, we became the proud subsidiary of Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS) founded in 1874.
Today, JNBS is the largest Building Society in the Caribbean with Assets of over J$42 billion and operates in the U.S.A, U.K and Canada.
NEM's main office is located at 9 King Street, Kingston. Branches are located in Kingston, Montego Bay, Mandeville, May Pen, Ocho Rios, Savanna La Mar, Port Antonio, Santa Cruz and Falmouth.
